A unique story line goes from typical novel to fast paced twists and turns. In the end I was laughing out loud at the irony and the intelligence of students in pre-Civil War West Point. This delightful read is extremely well researched and includes historical figures such as Robert E. Lee. It is fun to read the author’s comments at the end of the book. (Do NOT read this first! It’s worth the wait.)A bonus novella is available for free by signing up for a monthly newsletter at sirimitchell.com. I couldn’t wait to start the surprise-laden novella…so I did immediately after finishing the book.
To the author: Please, please let this be the first of a series. I can’t wait for more!!

Flirtation Walk Siri Mitchell 9780764210389 Books Reviews
Delightful story based on the exploits of actual West Point graduates. Story of The Immortals was new to me. However, knowing what was ahead for these friends in just over 4 years made my heart hurt. Seth was from the North but his respect for Col. Lee made me ponder how difficult it might have been to chose sides. Otter's Story offered on Siri's website was delightful and a total surprise (highly recommend getting this follow up novella). Would love to see future novellas about the other characters as they move through a turbulent history.
So much potential wasted. The book begins with a lot of narrative, telling rather than showing what has happened in the main character's life to this point. Her sudden change of heart was not believable. How much more effective to start the story earlier in her life, and bring the reader into some of her and her father's activities. Show rather than tell. Let the reader go along on one or two of the cons, understand the father and her better, give some background. As it was, I found the book to be insipid and boring and really didn't want to waste my time reading through to the end. The last few books Siri has written have been quite, quite disappointing. Earlier, Mitchell wrote a couple of my all-time favorite books (A Constant Heart and the Miracle Thief, with the Cubicle Next Door and Love's Pursuit ranking high as well). This one, along with the previous three or four books she has written, simply don't seem to have come from the same author.
After the death of her con-man father, Lucinda Curtis finds herself attempting to gain respectability with her mother’s estranged family in West Point, New York. At the nearby military academy, Seth Westcott is simultaneously trying to shed his sterling reputation in an attempt to earn a lowly calvary assignment out west to rescue his penniless sister. Will either of them learn where true self-worth comes from, or that despite their complicated pasts, they make a perfect match?
With her typical giftedness in storytelling and character-development, Siri Mitchell captivates the reader in this entertaining and thought-provoking novel. The setting of West Point academy and the neighboring town of Buttermilk Falls is interestingly packed with fun historical tidbits. The antics of Seth’s academy friends who aid in his purposeful academic downfall were particularly entertaining.
Again, in her usual fashion, Mitchell tells an engaging story while also delving into much deeper subjects. What exactly makes someone “good” or respectable? Is following the letter of the law always right or just? Do we all present ourselves as more righteous than we actually are? As Lucinda and Seth answer these questions for themselves, Mitchell treats her readers to a lovely love story along the way.
For this reader, Flirtation Walk has easily become a new favorite from Mitchell, second only to She Walks in Beauty.
I received this book for free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
This story is set at the United States Military Academy and the nearby small town of Buttermilk Falls in the year 1855. The main characters are Seth Westcott, a cadet at the academy and Lucinda Pennyworth, the niece of one of the teachers at the academy. Lucinda has arrived in town to throw herself on the mercy of her aunt and uncle whom she has never met after the death of her father. She has nowhere else to go and no way to earn an honest living as she has been in finishing school. She has survived in the past as an accomplice to her father and his swindling schemes, cheating people out of their money. Lucinda has never thought of this as something bad as her father has told her they are exchanging their money for hope. Then, while living with her aunt, she begins to see truth and is convicted of all the lies and deception her father has taught her. She learns about God in a new, revealing way and has His light shine on the darkness in her life. She also develops a fondness for Seth, but eventually sees her past prevents a future with him.
Seth is in his last year at the academy. He receives a letter telling of his mother’s death and his younger sister being left to sell the family farm on her own. Seth is denied leave from the army to help his sister. On her way to live with relatives in Kentucky, she loses all the money by investing in a nonexistent hotel. Her only proof is a worthless deed to property that doesn’t exist. Seth vows to find the swindler and get the money back, but to do so he needs to go west where the swindler has been operating. Only the lowliest of cadets makes it into the cavalry and get sent west. The only problem is Seth is at the top of his class and due to be sent to Europe immediately after graduation, leaving him no time to get his money back or take care of his sister. How will he accomplish justice?
I applaud the amount of research the author did to write this book and I really enjoyed learning more about the life of a cadet in the 1800s United States Military Academy. Lucinda’s father was such a mean snake! I really liked the supporting characters of Deacon, Dandy and Otter as well as Phoebe. I hope the series will continue and develop some stories for these characters. The plot was a little slow moving for me and the two main characters weren’t as appealing to me as they could have been, but overall I still liked the book.
